    Answer

Guṇasthāna in Jain Dharma means the stages of spiritual development of the soul. There are 14 Guṇasthānas, and they describe how a soul gradually moves from bondage and ignorance toward pure consciousness, total liberation, and Kevalajñāna.

    Explanation

In Jain philosophy, the soul is pure by nature, but due to karma, it is covered by ignorance, passions, attachment, and negligence. The 14 Guṇasthānas show the soul’s inner journey as it slowly reduces karmic bondage.

These stages are not physical places. They are inner states of the soul.

    Why Guṇasthāna is important

    It helps us understand:
    • where the soul is on the spiritual path
    • how much karma still binds it
    • what kind of effort is needed for progress
    • how one moves toward moksha

    The 14 Guṇasthānas

    1. Mithyātva

Wrong belief. The soul does not see truth correctly.

    1. Sāsādana

A falling state from right faith. There is instability.

    1. Miśradrishti

Mixed faith. Right and wrong belief are both present.

    1. Avirata Samyagdrishti

Right faith arises, but vows are not yet fully observed.

    1. Deśavirati

Partial self-restraint. A layperson follows some vows.

    1. Pramattasaṃyata

Full restraint begins, but negligence remains.

    1. Apramattasaṃyata

    Full restraint without negligence.

    1. Apūrvakaraṇa

    A deeper spiritual transformation begins.

    1. Anivṛttibādarasāmparāya

Very subtle passions remain, but they are weakening.

    1. Sūkṣma-sāmparāya

    Only very subtle greed remains.

    1. Upaśānta-moha

Delusion is temporarily suppressed, but not destroyed.

    1. Kṣīṇa-moha

    Delusion is completely destroyed.

    1. Sayogī Kevalī

Kevalajñāna is attained while the body, speech, and mind still function.

    1. Ayogī Kevalī

The final stage before liberation. All activity stops, and the soul attains moksha.

    Simple understanding of the path

You can think of the Guṇasthānas like this:
    • first, wrong belief
    • then confusion
    • then partial clarity
    • then right faith
    • then discipline
    • then deep purification
    • then complete knowledge
    • then liberation

    Main forces that determine progress

The soul rises through the Guṇasthānas by reducing:
    • mithyātva — wrong belief
    • avirati — lack of restraint
    • pramāda — negligence
    • kaṣāya — anger, pride, deceit, greed
    • yoga — activity of mind, speech, and body

    Spiritual Understanding

The teaching of Guṇasthāna is deeply practical. It shows that spiritual growth is gradual and depends on inner purification.

    It reminds us that:

    • liberation is not sudden
    • every effort in right faith, restraint, and तपस्या matters
    • the real battle is against karma and passions
    • progress happens step by step

For a Jain साधक, Guṇasthāna is a mirror. It helps one honestly see:

    • how much attachment remains
    • how strong the passions are
    • how much self-control has developed
    • how near or far one is from the state of pure soul

    Takeaway

Guṇasthāna is the Jain map of spiritual evolution. It explains how the soul rises from ignorance to liberation through right faith, right conduct, restraint, and purification.

    • a Gujarati explanation
    • or a diagram-style summary of all Guṇasthānas
