Is divorce a sin?
In Jainism, marriage is considered a social institution rather than a religious sacrament. Jain scriptures do not explicitly discuss divorce as a sin. Instead, Jain teachings emphasize values such as truthfulness (satya), non-violence (ahimsa), and mutual respect in all relationships, including marriage.
If a relationship leads to suffering, conflict, or harm to either party, Jain philosophy encourages minimizing harm and upholding compassion. While separation or divorce is not encouraged, it is not labeled as a sin in Jainism. The focus remains on conducting oneself with honesty, non-violence, and dignity, regardless of the situation.
Ultimately, decisions like divorce should be guided by the core Jain principles of ahimsa (non-violence), aparigraha (non-possessiveness), and compassion for all living beings, including oneself and one’s spouse.
