m first Shatak, 4th Udeshak 1. What do you understand by Upasthaan kriya, Upakraman Kriya, Pandit virya, Baal virya and Baalpandit virya?-Bhagavati sutra

    2 months ago 8

    Answer

In the Bhagavati Sutra, these terms are understood as different kinds of spiritual or physical capacity and activity:

    • Upasthaan kriya: the act of attending, being present, or engaging in purposeful activity with awareness.
    • Upakraman kriya: the act of initiating, undertaking, or beginning an activity.
    • Pandit virya: the wise or disciplined energy used with right understanding, self-control, and discrimination.
    • Baal virya: the childlike or ignorant energy used without right understanding, often driven by delusion or attachment.
    • Baalpandit virya: a mixed state of energy in which a person has some wisdom but is still partly influenced by ignorance or worldly attachment.

    Explanation

These expressions are used to show that energy, effort, and action are not all the same in Jain thought.

    • Some actions are done carelessly or without true understanding — this is Baal virya.
    • Some are done with wisdom, restraint, and clarity — this is Pandit virya.
    • Some people are in-between: they have some understanding, but not complete detachment — this is Baalpandit virya.

    Similarly:

    • Upasthaan kriya points to active presence or participation.
    • Upakraman kriya points to the beginning or undertaking of an action.

    Spiritual Understanding

In Jain Dharma, the value of any action depends not only on the outer act, but also on the inner state:

    • Is the action done with awareness?
    • Is it guided by right knowledge?
    • Is it free from attachment and delusion?

That is why Pandit virya is spiritually श्रेष्ठ, because it is connected with wisdom and self-control. Baal virya binds more karma because it lacks understanding. Baalpandit virya shows a stage of growth, where one is moving toward purity but is not yet fully stable.

    Takeaway

These terms teach us that in Jainism, the quality of effort matters as much as the effort itself. The goal is to transform ordinary energy into wise, restrained, and spiritually pure effort.

If you want, I can also give you these five terms in simple Gujarati or in exam-style short notes.
