Jainism teaches that its principles are eternal and have always existed in the universe. According to Jain philosophy, the truths of Jainism—such as ahimsa (non-violence), anekantavada (non-absolutism), and aparigraha (non-possessiveness)—are not created by any founder but are rediscovered and taught by Tirthankaras in every time cycle (kalachakra). Lord Rishabhanatha (Adinath) is considered the first Tirthankara of the current time cycle.

From the Jain perspective, the religion is not viewed as having a historical "beginning" in the same way as other religions, but rather as an eternal dharma (truth or law) that periodically becomes known to humanity through the teachings of Tirthankaras. Therefore, Jains believe their tradition is timeless and among the earliest spiritual paths known to humanity.
