    What are different jain mantras

    2 months ago 4

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, the most important and widely recited mantra is the Namokar Mantra, also known as the Navkar Mantra. It is the supreme Jain mantra and is based on reverence for the five supreme beings.

Some commonly known Jain mantras and sacred recitations are:

    • Namokar Mantra / Navkar Mantra
    • Panch Parmeshti Mantra
    • Namo Arihantanam
    • Namo Siddhanam
    • Namo Ayariyanam
    • Namo Uvajjhayanam
    • Namo Loe Savva-sahunam

    Explanation

The Namokar Mantra is the central mantra in Jainism. It does not ask for worldly favors. Instead, it expresses deep respect and devotion toward the pure and liberated souls.

    Its five salutations are:

    • Arihantas — the spiritually awakened souls who have destroyed inner enemies
    • Siddhas — liberated souls
    • Acharyas — spiritual leaders
    • Upadhyayas — teachers of scripture
    • Sadhus — monks and nuns following the path of liberation

A simple traditional form of the mantra is:

Namo Arihantanam Namo Siddhanam Namo Ayariyanam Namo Uvajjhayanam Namo Loe Savva-sahunam

This means: I bow to Arihantas, Siddhas, Acharyas, Upadhyayas, and all Sadhus in the world.

    Spiritual Understanding

Jain mantras are not for seeking material gain. Their purpose is:
    • to purify the mind
    • to develop humility
    • to remember the qualities of the spiritually perfect
    • to move the soul toward right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct

Among all Jain recitations, the Namokar Mantra is considered the most sacred and most universal.

    Takeaway

If you want to begin with one Jain mantra, start with the Namokar Mantra. It is the essence of Jain devotion and the foundation of Jain spiritual practice.
