At which time we should not recite mantras?
Answer
In Jain tradition, mantras should generally not be recited during impure, disrespectful, or inattentive situations, such as:- While using the toilet or bathroom
- While eating or drinking
- While sleeping or half-asleep
- When the mind is very angry, distracted, or disturbed
- In an unclean or disrespectful place
- While doing activities that do not allow full focus and reverence
Explanation
Mantra recitation in Jain Dharma is meant to be done with:- Shuddhi — purity
- Shraddha — faith
- Ekagrata — concentration
- Vinay — reverence
So the main idea is not just about time, but about inner and outer purity. If the mind is not steady or the place is not respectful, it is better to wait.
