Height of all tirth in 3rd ara
In Jain cosmology, time is divided into cycles called "aras." The "third ara" (also called Duṣamā-Ṣuṣamā) is considered a period of diminishing happiness and spiritual practice in the current era. The concept of tīrthas (holy places) and their height is often discussed in relation to the temples and images of the Tirthankaras, especially during different aras.
However, more commonly, Jain scriptures describe the height of the Tirthankaras' images (mūrtis) and their physical height when they were born or attained kevala jñāna, specifically in the context of different aras.
During the third ara:
- According to Jain tradition, the height of the Tirthankaras and their images decreases with each successive ara.
- In the third ara, which is the current era, it is believed that the height of the images of Tirthankaras (and the Tirthankaras themselves, if they were to be born) is much less compared to the earlier aras.
- For example, in the first ara, Tirthankaras are described as being hundreds of dhanush (a traditional unit, roughly 6 feet) tall; this height reduces in successive aras.
- By the third ara, the height is described as being around 20 dhanush (approximately 120 feet), but some texts mention even smaller figures, and in the current times, the images made in temples are of human scale (few feet to several meters).
Summary Table (approximate heights): | Ara | Height of Tirthankaras (in dhanush) | |-------------|-------------------------------------| | First (Suṣamā-suṣamā) | 500 dhanush (3000 feet) | | Second (Suṣamā-duṣamā) | 100 dhanush (600 feet) | | Third (Duṣamā-suṣamā) | 20 dhanush (120 feet) | | Fourth (Duṣamā) | 10 dhanush (60 feet) | | Fifth & Sixth | No Tirthankaras |
Note: These numbers are traditional and symbolic, and may vary across Jain texts and sects. The most commonly referenced texts for these details are the "Tiloya Panatti" and "Trilokasara."
If you have a specific tīrth or temple in mind, or want the height of a particular Tirthankara's idol in the third ara, please clarify!
