    can you give jain niyam

    one year ago 128

Certainly! In Jainism, "Niyam" refers to rules, vows, or codes of conduct that guide ethical and spiritual living. These niyams help a follower cultivate discipline, non-violence, and progress on the path of liberation. There are various sets of niyams depending on the context (layperson, monk, daily conduct, etc.), but for laypersons (Śrāvakas), the following are commonly emphasized:

Five Main Anuvratas (Small Vows for Laypersons)

    1. Ahimsa Anuvrata: Vow of non-violence – Avoid causing harm to living beings as much as possible.
    2. Satya Anuvrata: Vow of truthfulness – Always speak the truth.
    3. Achaurya (Asteya) Anuvrata: Vow of non-stealing – Do not take anything that is not willingly given.
    4. Brahmacharya Anuvrata: Vow of chastity – Practice self-control over sensual pleasures; for laypersons, this means fidelity.
    5. Aparigraha Anuvrata: Vow of non-possessiveness – Limit attachment and accumulation of material possessions.

    Additional Niyams for Daily Practice

    • Samayik Niyam: Observing periods of equanimity and meditation.
    • Pratikraman Niyam: Regular repentance and reflection on one’s actions.
    • Vrat Niyam: Observing fasts and other vows according to Jain calendar.
    • Swadhyay Niyam: Daily study of Jain scriptures.
    • Dev, Guru, Shastra Poojan Niyam: Regular worship of the Tirthankaras (Jinas), teachers (Gurus), and scriptures (Shastras).

    Eight Main Rules (Ashta Niyam)

Some Jain traditions also mention Ashta Niyam (Eight Rules), which include:
    1. Not eating before sunrise or after sunset.
    2. Eating only after offering food to monks, nuns, or the needy.
    3. Observing dietary restrictions according to Jain principles.
    4. Practicing forgiveness.
    5. Practicing humility.
    6. Speaking kindly and truthfully.
    7. Practicing charity.
    8. Engaging in regular self-study and meditation.

These niyams serve as foundational principles for living a life of non-violence, truth, and spiritual advancement in Jainism.
