In Jainism, the principle of brahmacharya (celibacy or control over sexual desires) is highly emphasized, especially for monks and nuns, but is also encouraged for lay followers (śrāvakas and śrāvikās) to the extent possible. Masturbation is considered a form of sexual indulgence and is generally discouraged because it stimulates passions (kashayas), increases attachment to sensual pleasures, and can lead to further desires and karmic bondage.

For monks and nuns, complete celibacy is a strict vow, and any form of sexual activity, including masturbation, is strictly prohibited. For laypeople, Jainism recommends self-restraint, and ideally, sexual activity is only for procreation within marriage. Masturbation is seen as a lapse in self-control and is advised against as it contradicts the path of self-purification and spiritual progress.

Practicing brahmacharya helps in conserving physical and spiritual energy, reducing passions, and moving closer to liberation (moksha). If someone struggles with this, Jain teachings encourage confession (pratikraman), repentance, and efforts to strengthen self-control through mindfulness, prayer, and reflection on Jain scriptures.
