    Answer

Jainism is one of the oldest spiritual traditions of India. It teaches non-violence, truth, non-possession, and self-discipline as the path to liberation.

    Explanation

The history of Jainism is traditionally connected with the line of 24 Tirthankars, spiritual teachers who showed the path to liberation.
    • The first Tirthankar was Bhagwan Rishabhdev, who is regarded as the founder of the Jain path in this era.
    • The 23rd Tirthankar was Bhagwan Parshvanath, a historical spiritual teacher.
    • The 24th and last Tirthankar of the current time cycle was Bhagwan Mahavir, who lived in the 6th century BCE.

Bhagwan Mahavir gave Jain teachings in a clear and powerful way:

    • Ahimsa, or non-violence
    • Satya, or truth
    • Asteya, or non-stealing
    • Brahmacharya, or chastity
    • Aparigraha, or non-possessiveness

Jainism developed in ancient India alongside other śramaṇa traditions. Over time, Jain communities grew, and the religion spread through merchants, monks, nuns, and devoted householders.

There are two major Jain traditions:

    • Digambara
    • Śvetāmbara

Both preserve the core principles of Jain Dharma, though some practices and interpretations differ.

    Spiritual Understanding

The history of Jainism is not only about dates and events. It is about the timeless journey of the soul toward purity, freedom, and liberation.

    Jain history reminds us that:

    • self-control is powerful
    • non-violence is the highest virtue
    • true religion is lived through conduct
    • every soul has the capacity to become liberated

    Takeaway

Jainism is an ancient, deeply ethical spiritual path centered on purity of soul, non-violence, and liberation. Its history is carried forward through the teachings of the Tirthankars, especially Bhagwan Mahavir.
