    explain Utsarpini kala of kalachakra

    one year ago 305

In Jainism, Kalachakra (the wheel of time) is divided into two equal halves: Utsarpini and Avasarpini. Each half consists of six distinct eras (aras), making a total of twelve eras in one complete cycle.

    Utsarpini Kāla

Utsarpini is the ascending half of the time cycle. During Utsarpini, the world and the moral, physical, and spiritual condition of living beings gradually improve. Life becomes easier, human lifespan increases, happiness and virtue rise, and suffering diminishes.

    Six Eras (Aras) of Utsarpini

    1. First Ara (Sukhama-sukhama): Complete happiness, no sorrow, humans have divine powers, and there is abundance and peace.
    2. Second Ara (Sukhama): Happiness still prevails, but slightly less than the first era.
    3. Third Ara (Sukhama-dukhamā): Mixed period where happiness still outweighs suffering.
    4. Fourth Ara (Dukhamā-sukhama): Suffering increases, but there is still some happiness.
    5. Fifth Ara (Dukhamā): Mostly suffering, with very little happiness.
    6. Sixth Ara (Dukhamā-dukhamā): Extreme misery, with almost no happiness.

After the sixth era, Utsarpini ends and the cycle reverses into Avasarpini (descending half), where conditions worsen until the cycle repeats.

    Significance

    • Utsarpini represents the period of progress, prosperity, and increasing spirituality.
    • According to Jain cosmology, these cycles are eternal and keep repeating endlessly.
    • Currently, according to Jain tradition, we are in the fifth era of Avasarpini, not Utsarpini.

In summary: Utsarpini Kāla is the ascending half of the eternal time cycle in Jain cosmology, marked by a gradual improvement in conditions for all living beings, culminating in an era of complete happiness and prosperity before the cycle reverses.
