what is 14 purva
In Jainism, the 14 Purvas (चतुर्दश पूर्व, Chaudah Purva) refer to ancient Jain scriptures that were considered to be the earliest and most comprehensive canonical texts. The word "Purva" means "prior knowledge" or "preceding texts." They contained an extensive and detailed exposition of Jain doctrine, cosmology, philosophy, metaphysics, conduct, and more.
According to Jain tradition:
- The 14 Purvas were part of the original Jain Agamas, specifically included within the Drstivada (the twelfth Anga), which is now considered lost.
- The Purvas were vast and covered every aspect of Jain knowledge, including karma, cosmology, logic, philosophy, ethics, and spiritual practices.
- Only a few highly advanced ascetics, such as Shrutakevalis, were believed to have mastered all the 14 Purvas after Mahavira’s nirvana.
- Over time, due to famine and loss of learned monks, the knowledge of Purvas faded, and today, the actual texts are not extant in either the Digambara or Shvetambara traditions.
The names of the 14 Purvas are:
- Utpada Purva
- Agryaniya Purva
- Viryapravada Purva
- Asti Nasti Pravada Purva
- Jnana Pravada Purva
- Satya Pravada Purva
- Atma Pravada Purva
- Karma Pravada Purva
- Pratyakhyana Purva
- Vidyanuvada Purva
- Kalyana Pravada Purva
- Prana Pravada Purva
- Kriyavada Purva
- Lokabindu Purva
The loss of the Purvas is a matter of great lament in Jain tradition, and their knowledge is considered to have been only partially preserved in later Jain Agamas and commentaries.
