    Unit of time

    one year ago 318

In Jainism, time (kāla) is considered eternal and is divided into infinite cycles, each having ascending (utsarpiṇī) and descending (avasarpiṇī) halves. Jain scriptures describe very detailed units of time, from the smallest to the largest. Here are some key units:

    1. Samaya (Samaya)

    - The smallest indivisible unit of time, impossible to further divide.

    1. Avalikā

    - 16,777,216 samayas make one avalikā. - The time taken to blink an eye.

    1. Muhūrta

    - 1 muhūrta = 16,894,784,000 samayas (48 minutes).

    1. Prahara

    - 1 prahara = 4 muhūrtas (3 hours, or one-eighth of a day).

    1. Day and Night

    - 1 day and 1 night = 8 praharas (24 hours).

    1. Paksha

    - 15 days = 1 paksha (fortnight).

    1. Māsa

    - 1 month = 2 pakshas (one lunar cycle).

    1. Ayana

    - 6 months = 1 ayana.

    1. Varsha

    - 1 year = 2 ayanas.

    1. Palyopama (Palyopam)

    - A very large unit of time, described as the time taken to empty a cubic pit of 1 yojana filled with tiny hairs by removing one hair every 100 years.

    1. Sāgaropama (Sāgaropam)

    - Even larger, equal to 10 quadrillion (10^15) palyopamas.

    1. Kalpa

    - An immensely long period, used to describe cosmic time cycles.

The Jain concept of time emphasizes the cyclical nature of existence and the vastness of cosmic periods, reflecting an intricate and philosophical understanding of temporality.
