    Steps in girnar tirth

    9 months ago 1811

Girnar Tirth is one of the most significant and ancient Jain pilgrimage sites, located near Junagadh in Gujarat, India. The main feature of this tirtha is the climb to the temples situated on the Girnar hill. Here are the steps generally involved in visiting and performing the pilgrimage at Girnar Tirth:

    1. Preparation and Purity:

Pilgrims prepare themselves with purity of body and mind, observing ahimsa (non-violence) and taking vows to maintain spiritual discipline during the yatra (pilgrimage).

    1. Starting Point – Taleti:

The pilgrimage begins at the base of the hill, known as Taleti. Here, devotees often take blessings at the temples situated at the base.

    1. Climbing the Steps:

Pilgrims ascend approximately 10,000 stone steps to reach the various Jain temples atop Girnar hill. The climb is physically demanding and usually begins early in the morning.

    1. First Main Stop – Neminath Temple:

The most prominent Jain temple on Girnar is dedicated to Bhagwan Neminath (the 22nd Tirthankara). Pilgrims pay homage here, perform puja (worship), and meditate.

    1. Ambaji Temple and Other Jain Temples:

Along the route, there are many temples, including those dedicated to Mallinath (19th Tirthankara), Parshvanath (23rd Tirthankara), and various Jain saints (Acharyas).

    1. Important Rituals:

Devotees perform darshan (viewing the deity), abhishek (ritual bathing of the idol), pradakshina (circumambulation), and offer prayers and bhakti (devotion).

    1. Completion and Descent:

After visiting all the Jain temples and completing their prayers, pilgrims descend the hill, again using the steps, and may revisit the Taleti temples for thanksgiving.

Significance: Climbing Girnar is considered a form of tapasya (austerity) and earns great spiritual merit (punya). Pilgrims believe that visiting Girnar and worshipping at the Neminath temple helps in the purification of the soul and progress on the path to liberation (moksha).

Note: Many Jains undertake this pilgrimage during the special festival of Kartik Purnima, but the tirth is open year-round.

    Summary of Steps:

    1. Prepare spiritually and physically.
    2. Begin at Taleti.
    3. Climb ~10,000 steps.
    4. Visit and worship at the main and subsidiary Jain temples.
    5. Perform rituals and prayers.
    6. Descend and complete the pilgrimage.
