    What is paryushan and why

    3 weeks ago 1

    Answer

Paryushan is one of the most important holy periods in Jain Dharma. It is a time for self-reflection, repentance, fasting, prayer, and forgiveness.

    Explanation

    During Paryushan, Jains focus on:
    • reviewing their actions
    • asking forgiveness for any harm caused
    • reducing worldly attachment
    • practicing discipline and simplicity
    • studying scriptures and strengthening spiritual life

The word Paryushan is understood as “staying close” to the soul or staying absorbed in spiritual practice.

    Why it is observed

Paryushan is observed so that a person can:
    • purify the mind and heart
    • weaken anger, pride, deceit, and greed
    • develop compassion and non-violence
    • become more aware of karma
    • move closer to liberation

It is a reminder that spiritual progress comes through inner cleansing, not just outer rituals.

    Spiritual Understanding

In Jain Dharma, the soul becomes covered by karma through unwholesome thoughts, words, and actions. Paryushan is a sacred opportunity to reduce that burden through:
    • tapas, or austerity
    • pratikraman, or self-review and repentance
    • kshamapana, or forgiveness
    • shravak and shravika discipline, or devout living

Its highest spirit is expressed in forgiveness: “Micchami Dukkadam” — “If I have hurt you in any way, knowingly or unknowingly, I ask for forgiveness.”

    Takeaway

Paryushan is a time to turn inward, purify the soul, and practice forgiveness. Its purpose is to help a Jain live with greater self-control, humility, compassion, and spiritual awareness.
