A samyagdrishti jeev in the fourth gunasthan, does upsham, shayopshamor kshay of darshan mohaniya karma, what happens to charitra mohaniya karma. Also, how does a jeev do upsham, kshay Or kshayopsham of charitra mohaniya karma
Answer
A samyagdrishti jīva in the 4th gunasthān has overcome darśan mohanīya so that right faith can arise, but charitra mohanīya is not fully finished at that stage. What happens is this:
- The strongest passions that block right faith, especially the anantānubandhī kaṣāyas, are removed at the level of samyaktva.
- But the remaining charitra mohanīya still stays in a subtle or active form.
- Because of that, the jīva is still avirata, meaning not yet fully established in vows and perfect conduct.
Explanation
In Jain doctrine:- Darśan mohanīya disturbs right belief.
- Charitra mohanīya disturbs right conduct.
So in the 4th gunasthān, the soul has gained right faith, but right conduct is still incomplete. That is why charitra mohanīya does not disappear completely there.
The gradual progression is generally understood like this:
- 4th gunasthān: right faith is established; charitra mohanīya still remains.
- 5th gunasthān: partial vows begin; some charitra mohanīya is weakened through kṣayopśam.
- 6th and 7th gunasthān: stronger restraint and less negligence.
- 8th to 10th gunasthān: very subtle passions remain and are progressively reduced.
- 11th gunasthān: upśam of mohanīya.
- 12th gunasthān: kṣay of mohanīya.
How does a jīva do upśam, kṣay, or kṣayopśam of charitra mohanīya?
This happens through gradual inner purification, not by one sudden effort.Main causes are:
- right faith
- self-restraint
- vows
- vigilance
- repentance
- tapas and austerity
- meditation
- vairāgya, or detachment
As anger, pride, deceit, greed, and other passions become weaker:
- sometimes they are only suppressed — that is upśam
- sometimes they are partly reduced and partly suppressed — that is kṣayopśam
- sometimes they are fully destroyed — that is kṣay
So the jīva does not “choose” these states at will in a simple way. They arise when inner purity, spiritual effort, and karmic maturity come together.
Spiritual Understanding
The key point is:- Samyaktva gives right vision.
- Charitra gives right living.
- The 4th gunasthān is the beginning of true spiritual light, but not yet the completion of conduct.
So the soul first removes the delusion of faith, and then gradually removes the delusion of conduct.
