What to chant when death is near

    3 weeks ago 5

    Answer

When death is near, the most auspicious chanting in Jain Dharma is the Namokar Mantra:

    Namo Arihantanam
    Namo Siddhanam
    Namo Aayariyanam
    Namo Uvajjhayanam
    Namo Loe Savva-Sahunam

    If possible, also calmly remember:

    • Micchami Dukkadam
    • Khamemi Savve Jiva
    • Forgiveness from all living beings
    • The virtues of the Panch Parmeshthi

    Explanation

At the time of death, Jain tradition places great importance on:
    • Peaceful remembrance
    • Non-attachment
    • Forgiveness
    • Pure inner focus

If the person can speak, chanting the Namokar Mantra is सर्वोत्तम and most sacred.

    If speaking is difficult, then:

    • listen to the mantra softly,
    • repeat it mentally,
    • or simply keep awareness on Arihant, Siddha, and the five supreme beings.

The key is not loudness, but steady, शांत, श्रद्धापूर्ण स्मरण.

    Spiritual Understanding

In Jain Dharma, the final moments are very important because the mind becomes deeply absorbed in whatever it remembers.

So at that time, one should remember:

    • the Panch Parmeshthi,
    • the path of purity,
    • forgiveness,
    • and detachment from the body and worldly ties.

This helps the soul remain शांत and move with greater spiritual upliftment.

    Takeaway

If death is near, quietly chant the Namokar Mantra and remember Micchami Dukkadam with a forgiving heart.

If the person cannot speak, even mental remembrance is highly meaningful.
