    Terapanth Shravak Maryada Rules

    one year ago 327

The Terapanth Shravak Maryada refers to the code of conduct and rules established for lay followers (shravaks and shravikas) of the Terapanth sect of Jainism. The Terapanth was founded by Acharya Bhikshu in the 18th century and emphasizes discipline, unity, and adherence to Jain principles.

The Terapanth Shravak Maryada is detailed in the text called "Maryada Patra". It was first composed by Acharya Bhikshu and later elaborated by subsequent Acharyas. The rules aim to guide the daily life, spiritual practices, and social behavior of lay followers. Below are some key rules and principles from the Terapanth Shravak Maryada:

    1. Faith and Devotion

    • Unwavering faith in the teachings of Lord Mahavira, the Jain scriptures (Agamas), and the guidance of the current Acharya.
    • Regular participation in religious activities and gatherings.

    2. Five Anuvratas (Small Vows)

    • Ahimsa (Non-violence): Avoid causing harm to any living being by thoughts, words, or actions.
    • Satya (Truthfulness): Always speak the truth.
    • Achaurya (Non-stealing): Do not take anything that is not willingly given.
    • Brahmacharya (Chastity): Practice sexual fidelity; in higher stages, celibacy.
    • Aparigraha (Non-possession): Limit possessions and avoid excessive attachment to material things.

    3. Additional Vows and Disciplines

    • Samayik: Regular practice of meditation and equanimity, usually for 48 minutes daily.
    • Swadhyaya: Daily study of Jain scriptures and teachings.
    • Upvas: Observing fasting on auspicious days, such as Paryushan and other holy days.
    • Charity: Regular giving to the needy and support for religious activities.

    4. Social Discipline

    • Obedience to the Acharya and respect for all monks and nuns.
    • Harmony and cooperation within the community (Sangh).
    • Refraining from gossip, slander, and creating discord.

    5. Ethical Conduct

    • Honesty in all dealings.
    • Avoidance of intoxicants and harmful substances.
    • Simplicity in lifestyle and humility in behavior.

    6. Organizational Discipline

    • Following the administrative and spiritual directives of the Acharya.
    • Participation in community service and collective religious functions.
    • Acceptance of the Terapanth’s unique organizational structure: a single Acharya leader, no sectarian splits, and unity under one head.

    7. Maryada Mahotsava (Discipline Festival)

    • An annual event where all Terapanth shravaks reaffirm their commitment to the Maryada and receive guidance from the Acharya.

    Important Note

The Terapanth Shravak Maryada is distinctive for its strong emphasis on discipline, unity, and centralized guidance under the Acharya. This has played a significant role in maintaining the coherence and growth of the Terapanth community.

For an in-depth and authoritative list, reference to the "Maryada Patra" and the teachings of the current Terapanth Acharya is recommended.
