Does Mahavir swami know that he is going to be Tirthankar
Answer
According to Jain tradition, Mahavir Swami would not have had full worldly awareness of his future Tirthankarhood before kevaljnan. But once he attained omniscience, he would have complete knowledge of his own Tirthankar state.Explanation
In Jain Dharma, the soul that becomes a Tirthankar has very special karmic merit from past lives. Because of that, the future Tirthankar may show noble signs and exceptional purity even before final liberation. However:
- Before kevaljnan, a being still functions in the ordinary human state.
- Full certainty about one’s final spiritual role comes with omniscience.
- So, Mahavir Swami’s complete knowledge of being a Tirthankar would be present after kevaljnan, not as an ordinary person with limited knowledge.
Spiritual Understanding
This teaches an important Jain principle:- Great spiritual destiny comes from past karmic causes.
- The highest truth is realized through inner purity and omniscience.
- A Tirthankar is not merely “appointed” in a worldly sense; the soul reaches that state through immense spiritual merit and the destruction of karmas.
