Sadhu na gun
Jainism holds sadhus (monks) and sadhvis (nuns) in very high esteem due to their strict adherence to spiritual discipline and renunciation. The "gun" (qualities or virtues) of a sadhu are central to Jain philosophy. Here are the main qualities (gunas) expected from a true Jain sadhu:
1. Samyak Darshan (Right Faith)
A sadhu should have unwavering faith in the true teachings of the Tirthankaras.2. Samyak Jnan (Right Knowledge)
He should possess true knowledge, free from doubt and delusion.3. Samyak Charitra (Right Conduct)
He must strictly follow the path of conduct as laid down by Jain scriptures.4. Panch Mahavrata (Five Great Vows)
A sadhu must observe the five major vows at the highest level: - Ahimsa (Non-violence) - Satya (Truth) - Asteya (Non-stealing) - Brahmacharya (Celibacy) - Aparigraha (Non-possession)5. Indriya Nigraha (Control of Senses)
Complete control over the senses and passions.6. Tapas (Austerity)
Practice of various austerities for self-purification.7. Vairagya (Detachment)
Complete detachment from worldly possessions and relationships.8. Shauch (Purity)
Purity of body, speech, and mind.9. Kshama (Forgiveness)
Forgiving nature and absence of anger.10. Vinay (Humility)
Humility and respect towards all beings.A Jain sadhu’s life is an embodiment of these virtues, aimed at self-realization and ultimate liberation (moksha).
