Why restraint of some thing itself is not dharma, why is it essential to take tyaag
Answer
In Jain Dharma, mere restraint by itself is not enough to be called true dharma unless it is joined with right understanding, inner detachment, and purity of intention. That is why tyaag is essential.Explanation
Restraint can happen in different ways:- A person may stop using something out of fear, habit, pressure, or social rule.
- A person may also avoid something externally, but still keep strong attachment inside.
- In such cases, the outer action changes, but the inner bondage remains.
In Jain thought, dharma is not only stopping an act. It is the movement of the soul toward:
- vairagya — detachment
- samyak bhav — right inner feeling
- self-control
- reduction of karma
That is why tyaag is important. Tyaag means conscious renunciation. It is not just “I am not doing this.” It is:
- “I understand why this is harmful.”
- “I am letting go of attachment.”
- “I am choosing purity and liberation.”
So, if restraint is only external, it may remain incomplete. But when restraint is joined with tyaag, it becomes spiritually powerful.
Spiritual Understanding
In Jain Dharma, the real cause of bondage is not only action, but attachment and aversion. Therefore:- If you only restrain the body but the mind still clings, the root problem remains.
- If you perform tyaag with awareness, the inner bondage weakens.
- Tyaag purifies intention, and that purity becomes dharma.
This is why Jain sadhana values both:
- sanyam — restraint
- tyaag — renunciation
Restraint protects you from new bondage. Tyaag helps uproot attachment itself.
