if an abhavya jiv was never bhavya, then how did it become abhavya, what was it before it, what caused it to become that

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, an abhavya jiva is not something that “became” abhavya at a certain point. It is understood as a beginningless state of that soul in relation to moksha.

    So the short answer is:

    • It was not “something else” before.
    • There was no first moment when it turned abhavya.
    • Jain philosophy generally sees this as anadi — without a beginning in time.

    Explanation

A bhavya jiva is one that has the capacity to attain liberation. An abhavya jiva is one that, by its own nature and karmic condition, will never attain moksha.

This does not mean an outside force suddenly changed it into an abhavya soul.

Instead, Jain teaching treats this as a classification of the soul’s liberation-capacity, not as a newly created identity. Just as some karmic states are beginningless, the distinction of bhavya and abhavya is also explained as beginningless in the context of samsara.

    So if you ask:

    • What was it before?
It was still that same soul, wandering in samsara.
    • What caused it to become that?
Jainism does not usually describe one single cause or one first event. It is understood as a beginningless karmic condition.

    Spiritual Understanding

This teaching reminds us that Jain Dharma looks at the soul very deeply:
    • The soul is eternal.
    • Karmic bondage is beginningless.
    • Not every soul is seen as having the same destiny for liberation.
    • Therefore, a soul’s present condition should be understood within the vast span of samsara, not as a simple one-life transformation.

This is also why Jainism emphasizes:

    • right faith,
    • right knowledge,
    • right conduct,
    • and vigilant effort by those who are bhavya.

    Takeaway

An abhavya jiva is not made abhavya by a later event. In Jain philosophy, it is understood as a beginningless condition of that soul in relation to liberation. There is no separate “before” in the ordinary sense, and no single cause that suddenly created it.
