What is the correct way of doing pakshal? On what parts of the Pratima is pakshal to be done?

    2 weeks ago 2

    Answer

Pakshal should be done gently, respectfully, and with clean water, as a form of purification before worship.

In general, pakshal is done on the entire Pratima, especially over:

    • the head
    • the shoulders and chest
    • the hands and arms
    • the legs and feet
    • the whole visible surface of the Pratima

    Explanation

    The correct way is:
    • Wash your hands and keep the mind शांत and श्रद्धापूर्ण.
    • Use clean water and, if the tradition of the temple allows, other purified liquids according to vidhi.
    • Pour gently, without force.
    • Do not scrub the Pratima harshly.
    • Do not touch with dirty hands or use anything rough.
    • Pakshal should be done as an act of reverence, not as ordinary cleaning.

In most Jain traditions, the Pratima is treated with great delicacy. The purpose is not physical washing only, but inner purification and devotion.

    Spiritual Understanding

Pakshal reminds us that before worship, our mind, speech, and body should become pure.

    It teaches:

    • humility
    • reverence for the Tirthankar Pratima
    • cleanliness in worship
    • detachment from ego and carelessness

The outward act of pakshal supports inward purity.

    Takeaway

The safest and most accepted guidance is: perform pakshal gently on the whole Pratima, especially from head to feet, with clean hands and pure intention. If a particular temple follows a specific vidhi, that local tradition should be followed respectfully.
