In jainism, when I take a shower in my bathrom or washed my skin, is it possible that they are water cteatures in my water? And is it so that so long my skin is wet, that the water creatures can be on my skin or on my towel?
Answer
Yes, in Jainism water is traditionally understood to contain very subtle living beings called jal-kāya jīva (water-bodied beings). So when you bathe, wash your skin, or have water on a towel, that water may be considered to contain such जीव.Explanation
A few important points:- If water is present, the living beings are considered present in that water.
- If your skin is wet, the water on your skin may still be carrying those minute water beings.
- If a towel is wet, the water in the towel is also considered to contain them.
- Once the water dries up or is absorbed/changed, Jain understanding does not usually describe those beings as remaining “on” the skin or towel in the same way.
So the concern is not that the creatures are clinging to your skin like visible insects, but that the water itself may contain very subtle life.
Spiritual Understanding
Jain Dharma teaches extreme sensitivity toward all forms of life, even very small or subtle ones. Because of this:- Bathing should be done carefully and with awareness.
- We should avoid unnecessary harm.
- For householders, such everyday actions are part of normal life, so the focus is on minimizing harm, not on becoming fearful.
A towel, skin, or bathroom is not considered “infested” in a visible sense. The teaching is about cultivating ahimsa and mindfulness even in ordinary activities.
