Actually I had promised to in front of God that I will not use instagram and eat no junk till I get rank but I found that it is not possible for me to continue this I want to break but should I take other promise to compensate this ??
Answer
If you truly cannot continue, do not make another promise just to “compensate” for the first one. In Jain Dharma, a vow should be taken with honesty and the capacity to keep it. If it has become difficult, it is better to stop it respectfully, do repentance, and then take only a smaller, realistic resolve that you can actually follow.Explanation
What you took was a sankalp or vow before Bhagwan. If you break it because it is not realistically possible anymore, the right approach is:- Accept it honestly rather than forcing yourself into a fake promise.
- Do alochana and pratikraman with sincerity.
- Ask forgiveness for what could not be maintained.
- Take a new vow only if it is practical and truthful.
For example, instead of saying “I will never use Instagram” or “I will never eat junk until rank,” you may take a gentler and more sustainable vow like:
- “I will limit Instagram to a fixed time.”
- “I will avoid junk on weekdays.”
- “I will follow a simpler diet during study hours.”
This is better than making a big promise you may break again.
Spiritual Understanding
In Jain Dharma, the value is not in making a dramatic vow, but in making a sincere, disciplined, and truthful resolve.A broken vow should not lead to guilt and confusion. It should lead to:
- awareness
- repentance
- self-control
- better planning
Bhav and honesty matter more than display. A small vow kept with steadiness is spiritually stronger than a large vow broken repeatedly.
