    Pratikraman vidhi for digambara

    9 months ago 218

Pratikraman is an important ritual in Jainism, involving repentance and reflection on one's actions. In the Digambara tradition, Pratikraman is typically performed daily, fortnightly (Pakshik), or during special occasions like Paryushan. Here is a general outline (vidhi) for Pratikraman as followed by Digambara Jains:

    ---

    Digambara Pratikraman Vidhi

    1. Preparation

    • Bathe and wear clean, simple clothes (preferably white for Shravaks).
    • Find a quiet and clean place for the ritual.
    • Sit in Padmasana or Sukhasana posture, facing North or East.
    • Maintain silence and a meditative attitude.

    2. Namokar Mantra

    • Recite the Namokar Mantra (Navkar Mantra) three times, with devotion.

    3. Guru Vandana

    • Offer salutations to the Guru or Acharya with folded hands.

    4. Samayik

    • Enter the state of Samayik (equanimity and detachment from worldly affairs).
    • Recite the Samayik Sutra:
    _"Ichchhāmi samāiyam..."_

    5. Kāyotsarga (Meditative Detachment)

    • Stand or sit in Kāyotsarga posture (stillness, detachment from the body).
    • Meditate for a few minutes, focusing on the soul and detachment from the body.

    6. Alocana (Confession of Sins)

    • Reflect upon and admit to wrongdoings committed knowingly or unknowingly in body, speech, or mind.
    • Recite the Alocana Sutra:
    _"Ichchhāmi dukkadam..."_

    7. Pratikraman (Repentance)

    • Recite the Pratikraman Sutra:
    _"Savva pāvappanāsanam..."_
    • Recall transgressions related to the vows (Anuvratas, Gunavratas, Shiksha Vratas) and express repentance.

    8. Khamat Khamna (Seeking Forgiveness)

    • Ask forgiveness from all living beings for any harm done:
    _"Michchhāmi Dukkadam"_
    • Recite it three times:
    _"Tassa Michchhāmi Dukkadam"_

    9. Pratyakhyan (Resolve & Renunciation)

    • Take resolve to avoid repeating mistakes and to adhere to vows more strictly in the future.

    10. Manglik / Mangal Path

    • Recite the Manglik or other auspicious prayers to conclude the ritual.

    ---

    Notes:

    • Texts Used: Digambara Jains may use the Pratikraman Sutra booklets (in Prakrit or Hindi/Sanskrit translations).
    • Duration: Daily Pratikraman can take 30–45 minutes; the fortnightly (Pakshik) or annual (Samvatsari) Pratikraman is more elaborate.
    • Language: Traditional Pratikraman is in Prakrit, but translations are available for better understanding.

    Common Pratikraman Sutras (Digambara tradition)

    • Namokar Mantra
    • Ichchhāmi Samāiyam
    • Tassa Michchhāmi Dukkadam
    • Kayotsarga Sutras
    • Pratyakhyan Sutras

    ---

For exact text, sequence, and pronunciation, it's best to refer to a Digambara Pratikraman book or consult a Jain monk or scholar, as there may be some variations according to local customs and sects.

Summary: The essence of Digambara Pratikraman is self-reflection, confession, repentance, forgiveness, and resolve for spiritual upliftment, performed with devotion and sincerity.
