I’m gay I’m planning to become a monk

    a week ago 3

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, the life of a monk is based on complete renunciation, strict celibacy, non-possession, discipline, and spiritual purification.

Being gay, by itself, is not the main question for monkhood. The real question is:

    • Can you sincerely renounce all sexual activity?
    • Can you live with complete brahmacharya?
    • Can you follow the discipline of a Jain monk under a proper Guru?
    • Can you give up attachment, identity-pride, possessions, and worldly desires?

If your intention is genuine, you should speak openly and respectfully with a qualified Jain Acharya, Muni, or spiritual Guru from your tradition.

    Explanation

Jain monkhood is not simply a social identity or lifestyle change. It is a very deep spiritual vow. A Jain sadhu takes the Mahāvratas:

    • Ahimsa — complete non-violence
    • Satya — truthfulness
    • Achaurya — non-stealing
    • Brahmacharya — complete celibacy
    • Aparigraha — non-possession

For a monk, brahmacharya means complete freedom from sexual activity, sexual indulgence, and sensual attachment. This applies to everyone, regardless of whether a person is attracted to men, women, both, or neither.

So Jain Dharma would focus less on the label “gay” and more on the inner capacity for restraint, detachment, humility, and spiritual discipline.

    Spiritual Understanding

In Jainism, the soul is beyond gender, body, sexuality, caste, status, and social identity. Liberation is the journey of the soul becoming free from karma, passions, and attachment.

At the same time, Jain monkhood requires very strict conduct. Therefore, the decision should not be rushed. It should come from:

    • deep vairāgya — detachment from worldly life
    • faith in Jain Dharma
    • readiness for discipline
    • guidance from a living Guru
    • emotional and spiritual maturity

    Takeaway

Your sexuality does not define your soul. But monkhood requires total celibacy and total renunciation. If your aspiration is sincere, take guidance from a respected Jain Guru and proceed with honesty, humility, and patience.
