By taking chemo do we kill all the germs of cancer, explain according to jainism

    7 days ago 6

    Answer

According to Jain Dharma, every form of life should be treated with compassion and care. However, taking chemotherapy for cancer is generally understood as a medical treatment taken to protect one’s life, not as an act of cruelty or violence.

Cancer is not usually described in Jainism as “germs.” Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of one’s own body cells. Chemotherapy is used to destroy or stop these harmful cancer cells, but it may also affect some healthy cells.

From a Jain viewpoint, the important question is not only “are cells being killed?” but also:

    • What is the intention?
    • Is the action necessary?
    • Is it being done with attachment, hatred, or cruelty?
    • Is one trying to minimize harm as much as possible?

If chemotherapy is taken with the intention of preserving life and reducing suffering, it is not the same as killing out of anger, pleasure, greed, or carelessness.

    Explanation

Jainism teaches Ahimsa, non-violence, as the highest dharma. At the same time, householders live in the world and inevitably perform some unavoidable harm in daily life, such as eating, walking, breathing, bathing, farming, cooking, or taking medicine.

For a layperson, Jain Dharma emphasizes:

    • Carefulness in action
    • Compassionate intention
    • Avoiding unnecessary violence
    • Reducing harm wherever possible
    • Maintaining spiritual awareness

Medical treatment is usually considered part of protecting the body, which is valuable because it allows the soul to continue spiritual practice, repentance, self-restraint, prayer, and right conduct.

So, taking chemotherapy is not considered the same as intentionally killing living beings for pleasure or violence. It is a difficult medical action taken under necessity.

    Spiritual Understanding

Jainism would guide a person to approach such treatment with:

    • No hatred toward the disease
    • No cruelty in the mind
    • Gratitude for the opportunity to preserve life
    • Repentance for any unavoidable harm
    • Faith in the soul’s purity beyond the body

A Jain patient may also do:

    • Navkar Mantra with calmness
    • Pratikraman or sincere repentance
    • Bhavna of forgiveness toward all living beings
    • Samayik, if physically possible
    • Peaceful acceptance of karma without fear or anger

The body is temporary, but while we have it, Jain Dharma encourages us to use it wisely for spiritual progress.

    Takeaway

Taking chemotherapy to treat cancer is generally a necessary medical action for preserving life, not an act of intentional cruelty. According to Jain principles, one should take treatment with awareness, compassion, minimum harm, repentance for unavoidable violence, and remembrance of the pure soul.
