Why does Jainism treat women on their periods like untouchables

    6 days ago 4

    Answer

Jainism does not teach that women on their periods are “untouchable” in the sense of being inferior, impure as persons, or spiritually lower.

In Jain Dharma, menstrual restrictions found in some communities are mainly connected with ideas of:

    • ritual purity,
    • temple discipline,
    • rest and physical sensitivity,
    • traditional rules followed by particular communities.

But a menstruating woman is still a soul — jīva — with the same spiritual worth and capacity for right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct.

    Explanation

In Jain tradition, certain activities may be avoided during menstruation, such as:

    • entering the temple sanctum,
    • performing pūjā involving direct ritual materials,
    • touching sacred objects,
    • participating in some formal religious rites.

These practices are often explained through traditional concepts of bodily discharge and ritual cleanliness. Jain ritual life places strong emphasis on external cleanliness because worship is performed with great care, restraint, and reverence.

However, this should not be confused with social rejection or humiliation. Treating a woman harshly, shaming her, isolating her cruelly, or calling her “untouchable” goes against the deeper Jain values of:

    • ahiṃsā — non-violence,
    • karuṇā — compassion,
    • samatā — equanimity,
    • respect for every soul.

    Spiritual Understanding

Jain Dharma teaches that the true impurity is not the body’s natural process. The deeper impurity is caused by passions such as:

    • anger,
    • ego,
    • deceit,
    • greed,
    • attachment,
    • aversion.

From the highest spiritual viewpoint, the soul is pure. Bodily states are temporary. Menstruation is a natural bodily function, not a moral fault.

So, if a family or community follows certain menstrual observances, they should be practiced with dignity, sensitivity, and understanding — never with disgust, discrimination, or disrespect.

    Takeaway

Jainism does not consider menstruating women spiritually inferior or untouchable. Some traditional restrictions exist around ritual purity, but using them to shame or mistreat women is not in harmony with Jain principles of ahiṃsā, compassion, and respect for every soul.
