Answer

In Jain Dharma, an Arihant is a living soul who has destroyed the four destructive karmas and attained Keval Jnan — perfect, infinite knowledge.

In the current time cycle on our Bharat Kshetra, there are traditionally understood to be no living Arihants present.

The last Tirthankar of the present time cycle was Bhagwan Mahavir Swami. After attaining moksha, He became a Siddha, not an Arihant.

Explanation

Arihants are of two broad types:

• Tirthankar Arihants — Arihants who re-establish the Jain Sangh and teach the path of liberation.
• Samanya Kevalis — Arihants who attain Keval Jnan but are not Tirthankars.

According to Jain tradition, after Bhagwan Mahavir’s nirvana, the presence of Kevalis gradually ended in Bharat Kshetra. Therefore, in our current era, Jain tradition does not identify any living Arihant among human beings here.

Spiritual Understanding

Even though there are no living Arihants in our region at this time, Jains worship Arihants through the Namokar Mantra:

• Namo Arihantanam — I bow to the Arihants.

This bowing is not to a particular living person today, but to the supreme spiritual state of Arihant: complete victory over inner enemies like anger, pride, deceit, and greed.
