explain jain cosmology
Answer
Jain cosmology explains the structure of the universe according to Jain Dharma. It teaches that the universe is eternal, uncreated, and governed by natural laws. It was not created by any god, and it will never be destroyed completely.
In Jain tradition, the universe is called Loka, the realm where souls, matter, motion, rest, space, and time exist. Beyond it is Aloka, infinite empty space where only space exists and no soul or matter can go.
Explanation
Jain cosmology divides existence into two main parts:
- Loka – the inhabited universe where worldly existence happens.
- Aloka – infinite empty space beyond the universe.
The Loka is traditionally described as having three major regions:
- Urdhva Loka – the upper world, where heavenly beings live.
- Madhya Loka – the middle world, where humans, animals, plants, and many other living beings exist.
- Adho Loka – the lower world, where hellish beings live.
1. Madhya Loka – The Middle World
Madhya Loka is especially important because this is where human birth occurs. According to Jain Dharma, only human life provides the proper opportunity to practice right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct, and to progress toward liberation.
It includes continents, oceans, mountains, and regions where different types of beings live. The land of spiritual practice, where Tirthankars appear, is part of Madhya Loka.
2. Urdhva Loka – The Upper World
Urdhva Loka is the realm of heavenly beings, called devas. These beings experience great pleasure and long lives due to good karmas.
However, heaven is not liberation. Heavenly beings are still bound by karma. When their heavenly lifespan ends, they take rebirth again according to their karmas.
3. Adho Loka – The Lower World
Adho Loka consists of hellish realms, where beings experience suffering due to intense harmful karmas.
Jain Dharma does not describe hell as eternal punishment. A being stays there only until the lifespan-producing karma of that birth is completed. After that, the soul takes another birth according to karma.
4. Siddha Shila – Abode of Liberated Souls
At the very top of the universe is Siddha Shila, the abode of liberated souls.
Souls who have destroyed all karmas become Siddhas. They rise naturally to the top of the universe and remain there forever in perfect knowledge, perfect perception, infinite bliss, and infinite energy.
They do not take birth again.
5. Six Eternal Substances
Jain cosmology is also based on the six eternal substances, called Dravyas:
- Jiva – soul or living substance
- Pudgala – matter
- Dharma Dravya – medium of motion
- Adharma Dravya – medium of rest
- Akasha – space
- Kala – time
These are eternal. They are not created, and they do not disappear. They undergo changes, but their essential existence remains.
Spiritual Understanding
Jain cosmology is not only a description of worlds and realms. Its main purpose is spiritual understanding.
It teaches that:
- The soul wanders through different births because of karma.
- Heavenly pleasure is temporary.
- Hellish suffering is also temporary.
- Human life is rare and spiritually precious.
- Liberation is the highest goal.
In Jain Dharma, the universe is vast, but the path to freedom is clear: purify the soul by reducing attachment, aversion, violence, passions, and karmic bondage.
Takeaway
Jain cosmology teaches that the universe is eternal and governed by karma. Souls move through different realms according to their actions, but through right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct, a soul can become free forever and attain Siddhahood.
