    What is karmic obstacles

    3 days ago 7

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, karmic obstacles are the difficulties created by one’s own karmas that prevent the soul from fully expressing its natural qualities such as infinite knowledge, perception, bliss, and energy.

These obstacles are not caused by an outside power. They arise because karma binds to the soul due to passions like:

    • Anger
    • Pride
    • Deceit
    • Greed
    • Attachment and aversion

    Explanation

According to Jain philosophy, the soul is naturally pure, conscious, and powerful. But karmic matter attaches to the soul and covers its true nature.

Some karmas directly act as obstacles. For example:

    • Jñānāvaraṇīya karma obstructs knowledge.
    • Darśanāvaraṇīya karma obstructs perception.
    • Mohanīya karma causes delusion, attachment, and wrong belief.
    • Antarāya karma creates obstacles in energy, charity, enjoyment, and spiritual effort.

Among these, Antarāya karma is especially known as obstructive karma because it prevents the soul from using its own strength and capacity fully.

    Spiritual Understanding

Karmic obstacles may appear as outer difficulties, but Jain Dharma teaches that their root is internal karmic bondage. By reducing passions and practicing right conduct, the soul gradually weakens these karmas.

Practices that help remove karmic obstacles include:

    • Samyak Darshan – right faith
    • Samyak Jnan – right knowledge
    • Samyak Charitra – right conduct
    • Ahimsa
    • Forgiveness
    • Self-discipline
    • Tapasya
    • Pratikraman
    • Meditation on the soul

    Takeaway

Karmic obstacles are the karmic coverings that limit the soul’s natural purity and power. Jain Dharma teaches that through awareness, self-control, non-violence, and spiritual practice, these obstacles can be reduced and ultimately destroyed.
