How do I move from 4th gunasthah to 5th or directly to the 7th gunasthan. What should I do. While I want to take diksha I'm too much attached to my mother. How do I overcome this 'moh' or attachment

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, moving from the 4th Gunasthān to higher Gunasthāns is not achieved by force, emotion, or sudden ambition. It happens through the gradual weakening of moha — attachment, delusion, and passions — by right faith, right knowledge, right conduct, restraint, and inner purification.

If you are at the stage of sincere spiritual longing but feel attachment to your mother, the first step is not to hate that attachment, but to understand it deeply and purify it.

    In Jain understanding:

    • 4th Gunasthān is the stage of right faith — samyag darshan.
    • 5th Gunasthān begins when one adopts partial vows and disciplined restraint as a layperson.
    • 6th and 7th Gunasthān are connected with monkhood and much higher purity of conduct.

So practically, one should first strengthen the 5th Gunasthān qualities before thinking of the 7th.

    Explanation

Your attachment to your mother is a form of rāga — emotional attachment. Jain Dharma does not teach cruelty or coldness. It teaches transformation from possessive attachment into pure compassion and equanimity.

    Ask yourself:

    • Do I love my mother as a soul, or am I attached to her as “mine”?
    • Do I want her spiritual welfare, or do I fear my own emotional pain?
    • Is my wish for diksha steady, or is it sometimes emotional excitement?
    • Can I remain calm if my mother disagrees, cries, or resists?

These questions are important because diksha requires deep inner steadiness.

To move from the 4th toward the 5th Gunasthān, focus on:

    • Taking Anuvrats sincerely under guidance.
    • Practicing Samayik regularly.
    • Doing Pratikraman with true repentance.
    • Reducing possessions and comforts step by step.
    • Controlling food desires through proper tapasya according to capacity.
    • Studying Jain scriptures under a learned Guru.
    • Serving sādhus, sādhvīs, and the sangh with humility.
    • Observing your passions — anger, ego, deceit, greed, and attachment.

The 7th Gunasthān is not something one should aim to “jump” into by desire. It is a very elevated state of careful conduct and inner purity. A person may take diksha externally, but the real rise in Gunasthān depends on inner destruction or suppression of deluding karma and passions.

    Spiritual Understanding

Attachment to your mother can be softened by repeated contemplation:

    • She is a separate soul. You are a separate soul.
    • Both of you have met due to karma.
    • This relationship is precious, but temporary.
    • True love is not possession.
    • The highest gift to loved ones is one’s own spiritual upliftment.

You do not need to become harsh toward your mother. Instead, gradually change your feeling from:

“My mother cannot live without me, and I cannot live without her”

    to:

“May my mother’s soul progress. May my soul progress. May both of us become free from attachment.”

This is the Jain way: not suppression, but purification.

    Practical steps to reduce moh:

    • Spend time in Samayik reflecting: “I am a soul, not this body, not these relations.”
    • Do anitya bhāvana — contemplation on impermanence.
    • Do anyatva bhāvana — contemplation that the soul is separate from body, family, and possessions.
    • Do asharana bhāvana — no worldly relation can ultimately protect the soul from karma.
    • Gradually reduce emotional dependency.
    • Speak with your mother lovingly about Dharma, not with pressure.
    • Stay near a proper Guru and take guidance before making any life-changing decision.

If your desire for diksha is genuine, it will become calmer, deeper, and more stable with time. True vairagya is peaceful; it is not agitation or rejection.

    Takeaway

Do not try to force yourself from the 4th Gunasthān directly to the 7th. Strengthen right faith, adopt disciplined lay conduct, reduce attachment step by step, and take guidance from a genuine Jain Guru.

Your mother should not become an obstacle of hatred, nor an object of binding attachment. See her as a soul, wish her welfare, serve her with compassion, and slowly cultivate inner detachment.

    The path is:

    moh → understanding → restraint → vairagya → diksha → pure conduct.

Move patiently, sincerely, and under Guru guidance.
