Ajiv ma jiv
In Jainism, Ajiva and Jiva are two fundamental categories that explain the constituents of existence.
Jiva ( जीव )
- Jiva refers to the living beings or souls.
- Jivas are conscious, possess knowledge, perception, bliss, and energy.
- They are capable of experiencing pleasure and pain, and they accumulate karma as a result of their actions.
- All forms of life, from the smallest microorganisms to humans and heavenly beings, are considered Jiva.
Ajiva ( अजीव )
- Ajiva refers to non-living substances.
- Ajiva lacks consciousness and cannot accumulate karma.
- According to Jain philosophy, Ajiva is further divided into five categories:
In summary:
- Jiva = Living, conscious entities (souls)
- Ajiva = Non-living, non-conscious entities (matter, space, time, etc.)
Understanding the distinction between Jiva and Ajiva is essential in Jain philosophy, as it forms the basis for understanding the cycle of birth, death, and liberation (moksha).
