Shravak na gun
In Jainism, a Shravak (householder lay follower) is expected to observe certain virtues or qualities, known as Shravak na Gun (गुण), to live a life in accordance with Jain principles.
The main 12 vows (Barah Vrata) and their associated qualities are often referred to as the Shravak na gun. These vows help the Shravak practice self-restraint and progress spiritually, even while living a household life.
The 12 Vows of a Shravak (Barah Vrata)
- Anuvratas (Lesser Vows) – 5
- Ahimsa Anuvrat: Limited non-violence - Satya Anuvrat: Limited truthfulness - Achaurya Anuvrat: Limited non-stealing - Brahmacharya Anuvrat: Limited celibacy or chastity - Aparigraha Anuvrat: Limited non-possession
- Guna Vratas (Supplementary Vows) – 3
- Dig Vrata: Limiting movement to certain directions/areas - Bhogopabhog Pariman: Limiting consumable and non-consumable possessions - Anartha-danda Viraman: Avoiding purposeless or harmful activities
- Shiksha Vratas (Disciplinary Vows) – 4
- Samayik Vrata: Practicing equanimity and meditation regularly - Desavakasik Vrata: Limiting activities to a certain space for a certain time - Paushadh Vrata: Living like a monk for a day or more at times - Atithi Samvibhag Vrata: Offering food and charity to monks, nuns, and the needy
