    Modified five precepts

    2 hrs ago 3

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, the “five precepts” usually refer to the Five Anuvrats — the small vows followed by householders. They are modified or limited forms of the Five Mahavrats followed fully by Jain monks and nuns.

    The five modified precepts are:

    • Ahimsa Anuvrat — limited vow of non-violence
    • Satya Anuvrat — limited vow of truthfulness
    • Achaurya / Asteya Anuvrat — limited vow of not stealing
    • Brahmacharya Anuvrat — limited vow of chastity or self-restraint
    • Aparigraha Anuvrat — limited vow of non-possessiveness

    Explanation

For monks and nuns, these vows are observed completely and are called Mahavrats.

For laypeople, they are observed according to household life, with practical limitations, so they are called Anuvrats.

    • Ahimsa: Avoid intentional harm to living beings as much as possible.
    • Satya: Speak truth that is beneficial and non-harmful.
    • Asteya: Do not take anything that is not willingly given.
    • Brahmacharya: Practice purity, faithfulness, and control over sensual desires.
    • Aparigraha: Limit possessions, attachments, and greed.

    Spiritual Understanding

These modified vows help a householder reduce violence, attachment, passions, and karmic bondage while still living in society and family life.

    Takeaway

The modified five precepts in Jainism are the Five Anuvrats, practical versions of the great vows meant for lay followers.
