Fifth and sixth ara problems and predictions

    55 minutes ago 3

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, the 5th Ara and 6th Ara are the later parts of the descending time cycle called Avasarpiṇī Kāla.

We are currently believed, according to Jain tradition, to be living in the 5th Ara, called:

Duḥṣamā Ara meaning an age of sorrow, spiritual decline, and difficulty.

    The 6th Ara is called:

Duḥṣamā-Duḥṣamā Ara meaning an age of extreme sorrow and severe decline.

These are not ordinary “predictions” in the modern sense, but part of Jain cosmology describing the gradual decline of human life, morality, strength, happiness, and spiritual capacity.

    Explanation

Jain time is divided into endless cycles:

    • Utsarpiṇī – ascending cycle, where conditions gradually improve
    • Avasarpiṇī – descending cycle, where conditions gradually decline

Each cycle has six divisions called Aras.

In the present descending cycle, the first four Aras have already passed. We are in the 5th Ara.

    5th Ara: Duḥṣamā Ara

According to Jain tradition, the 5th Ara is marked by:

    • Decline in morality and truthfulness
    • Increase in violence, greed, attachment, anger, pride, deceit, and selfishness
    • Weakening of spiritual discipline
    • Shorter lifespan compared to earlier ages
    • Reduced physical strength and mental purity
    • More suffering, disease, conflict, and insecurity
    • Difficulty in practicing deep austerity and right conduct

A very important Jain belief is that during the 5th Ara:

    • No new Tirthankar is born in Bharat Kshetra.
    • Keval Jnan does not occur in this region during this period.
    • Moksha from Bharat Kshetra is not attained during this Ara.

However, Jain Dharma still remains present through scriptures, monks, nuns, laypeople, temples, rituals, vows, compassion, and spiritual practice.

    6th Ara: Duḥṣamā-Duḥṣamā Ara

The 6th Ara is described as even more difficult.

According to Jain tradition, it will be an age of extreme decline, where:

    • Religion will disappear from ordinary practice
    • Compassion and moral discipline will become very rare
    • Violence and suffering will greatly increase
    • Human lifespan, height, strength, and happiness will decline further
    • Spiritual understanding will become extremely weak
    • Proper practice of Jain Dharma will no longer be available in the same way

It is described as a time when human beings will live with intense fear, pain, conflict, hunger, and spiritual darkness.

    Important Clarification

Jainism does not teach that the universe ends permanently after the 6th Ara.

After the lowest point of the descending cycle, the ascending cycle, Utsarpiṇī, begins again. Conditions gradually improve over time.

    So Jain time is:

    • Beginningless
    • Endless
    • Cyclical

There is no permanent “end of the world” in Jain Dharma.

    Spiritual Understanding

The purpose of learning about the 5th and 6th Ara is not to create fear.

Its purpose is to remind us:

    • Human birth is precious
    • Jain Dharma is still available now
    • We should not delay spiritual practice
    • Right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct should be cultivated while possible
    • Ahimsa, restraint, forgiveness, and detachment are especially important in difficult times

Even in the 5th Ara, a person can still reduce karma, practice vows, serve Dharma, develop samyaktva, do tapasya, study scriptures, and progress spiritually.

    Takeaway

The 5th Ara is the present age of spiritual and moral decline, but Jain Dharma is still available.

The 6th Ara will be an age of much greater suffering and loss of Dharma.

The Jain message is clear: Do not wait. Practice Dharma now, while the path is still available.
