Jain on hierarchy divide between Sects? It's really similar to Caste divide

    an hour ago 2

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, the highest spiritual value is not birth, social status, sect, or community identity. It is the purity of the soul, expressed through:

    • Right Faith
    • Right Knowledge
    • Right Conduct
    • Non-violence
    • Self-discipline
    • Reduction of attachment and ego

So, any feeling of superiority based on sect, caste, family, region, dress, ritual style, or community background is not aligned with the deepest Jain spiritual teaching.

    Explanation

Jains do have different traditions and sects, such as Śvetāmbara and Digambara, and within them further sub-traditions. These differences may include:

    • Scriptural traditions
    • Monastic practices
    • Temple rituals
    • Iconography
    • Historical lineages
    • Rules followed by monks, nuns, and laypeople

These differences are real, but they should not become a basis for hatred, pride, or discrimination.

In Jain philosophy, attachment to identity is a form of ego. If someone thinks, “My sect is spiritually superior simply because it is mine,” that can become a form of māna — pride — which is considered harmful to spiritual progress.

    Comparison with Caste Divide

Your comparison is understandable. When sect identity becomes a social hierarchy, it can feel similar to caste division.

But spiritually, Jain Dharma does not teach that one soul is higher or lower by birth. Every soul has the same essential nature:

    • Infinite knowledge
    • Infinite perception
    • Infinite bliss
    • Infinite energy

The difference between beings is due to karma, not permanent superiority or inferiority.

From a Jain viewpoint, judging people by birth, sect, wealth, surname, or community status strengthens attachment and aversion. That moves the soul away from liberation.

    Spiritual Understanding

A true Jain approach would be:

    • Respect different Jain traditions
    • Follow one’s own path sincerely
    • Avoid insulting other sects
    • Do not turn religious identity into ego
    • See all souls with compassion and equality

Jain Dharma emphasizes anekāntavāda, the principle that reality has many aspects. This encourages humility. It teaches us not to become rigid, arrogant, or hateful toward those who follow a different tradition.

    Takeaway

Sect differences may exist in practice, but sect superiority and social hierarchy are not the essence of Jain Dharma. A Jain should measure spiritual greatness by humility, non-violence, self-control, compassion, and purity of conduct — not by sect or caste.
