So all the people in the west who don’t know about Jainism are

    2 hrs ago 2

    Answer

No. In Jain Dharma, people who do not know about Jainism are not automatically considered bad, sinful, or spiritually condemned.

Jainism judges spiritual progress mainly by:

    • One’s intentions
    • One’s actions
    • Attachment and aversion
    • Violence or non-violence in thought, word, and deed
    • Karmas bound by the soul

A person may not know the word “Jainism,” yet still live with kindness, honesty, compassion, restraint, and non-violence. Such qualities are spiritually valuable in Jain Dharma.

    Explanation

Jain Dharma teaches that every soul has the potential for liberation. Spiritual bondage happens because of karmas caused by passions such as anger, ego, deceit, greed, attachment, and hatred.

So the question is not simply:

    • “Does this person belong to Jainism?”

    but more deeply:

    • “Is this person reducing violence?”
    • “Is this person living with compassion?”
    • “Is this person controlling passions?”
    • “Is this person moving toward right understanding?”

However, from the Jain perspective, true liberation requires right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct. Therefore, not knowing Jain Dharma may mean a person does not yet have complete right understanding as described in Jain teachings. But that does not mean they are evil or hopeless.

    Spiritual Understanding

Jainism is not based on condemning others. It is based on self-purification.

A Jain should not look at people in the West, or anywhere else, with pride or judgment. Instead, Jain Dharma teaches humility, compassion, and maitri bhavana — friendship toward all living beings.

Many people may be spiritually sincere even if they are born in places where Jain Dharma is not widely known. Their good conduct can still help them bind punya karma and gradually move toward higher spiritual development.

    Takeaway

People who do not know about Jainism are not automatically “lost” or “bad.” According to Jain Dharma, every soul is on its own journey, and what matters is purification from karma through right understanding, non-violence, self-control, and compassion.
