first written scripture of jainism and what its first pages or paragraphs says

    an hour ago 3

    Answer

In Jain tradition, the earliest Jain scriptures are the teachings of Bhagwan Mahavir as preserved by his Ganadhars, especially Gautam Swami. These teachings were first transmitted orally, not written down immediately.

The traditionally accepted earliest Jain canonical text is the Āchārāṅga Sūtra, which belongs to the Śvetāmbara Jain canon. It is considered one of the oldest surviving Jain scriptures.

    Its opening teachings focus on:

    • Awareness of the soul
    • Non-violence toward all living beings
    • Carefulness in conduct
    • Restraint of body, speech, and mind
    • The life and discipline of a Jain monk

    Explanation

Jain scriptures were not originally written like modern books. Bhagwan Mahavir gave teachings, and his chief disciples organized them into scriptural knowledge known as Angas. For many centuries, these teachings were preserved through memorization and oral recitation.

According to Śvetāmbara tradition, the scriptures were later written down in a formal council at Valabhi under the leadership of Āchārya Devardhigani Kshamashraman.

The Āchārāṅga Sūtra begins with teachings that emphasize that all living beings experience pain and do not wish to be harmed. Therefore, a seeker must practice deep non-violence and self-restraint.

A simple meaning of its early message is:

    • One should understand the nature of living beings.
    • One should not injure, dominate, enslave, trouble, or kill any living being.
    • A spiritual aspirant must live with awareness and discipline.
    • True religion begins with compassion and carefulness.

    Spiritual Understanding

The beginning of Jain scripture does not start with worship of a creator God, but with spiritual responsibility. It asks the seeker to realize:

    • “Just as I do not want pain, other living beings also do not want pain.”
    • “Violence binds karma.”
    • “Compassion, restraint, and awareness purify the soul.”

This reflects the heart of Jain Dharma: Ahimsa, self-discipline, and liberation of the soul.

    Takeaway

The first Jain scriptures were preserved orally before being written. The Āchārāṅga Sūtra is among the oldest surviving Jain texts, and its opening message teaches carefulness, compassion, and non-violence toward all living beings.
