How is birth in dev yoni looks like. How is life there. Tell me everything about it

    one year ago 212

In Jainism, dev yoni refers to birth in the heavenly realms, where beings are known as devas (celestial beings or gods). Here is a detailed explanation based on Jain scriptures:

    1. Nature of Dev Yoni

    • Dev yoni is one of the four main gatis (destinies) in Jain cosmology: human (manushya), hellish (naraki), animal/plant (tiryancha), and celestial (dev).
    • Celestial beings are born in various heavens, which are divided into multiple levels.

    2. Types of Heavens

Jainism describes four main types of heavens:

    1. Devas of the lower heavens (Vyantaras and Jyotishkas): These include beings like Yakshas, Gandharvas, etc.
    2. Kalpa-vasi devas: Beings living in the 12 or 16 heavens called Kalpas.
    3. Vaimanika devas: Beings in the Anuttara and other superior heavens.
    4. Heavens of the Graiveyaka and Anuttara: Highest heavens, closest to liberation but still within the cycle of birth and death.

    3. Life in Dev Yoni

    • Pleasures and Comforts: Devas enjoy immense pleasures and comforts far beyond those found in the human world. Their bodies are beautiful, radiant, and free from disease and old age.
    • No Gross Suffering: There is no hunger, thirst, or physical pain as in the human or animal realms.
    • Mental Suffering: However, devas can still experience jealousy, pride, and certain types of mental anguish, especially due to rivalry or loss of status.
    • Lifespan: The lifespan of devas is extremely long, varying by the level of heaven, ranging from thousands to millions of years (as per human calculation).
    • No Spiritual Progress: While devas enjoy great pleasures, spiritual progress is difficult in dev yoni because of the distraction of sensual enjoyments and lack of suffering that often motivates spiritual pursuit.

    4. How is Birth in Dev Yoni Attained?

    • Karmic Causes: Birth in dev yoni is a result of punya (meritorious karma) such as charity, truthfulness, non-violence, and religious observances performed with worldly desires.
    • Not the Ultimate Goal: Jainism teaches that even heavenly pleasures are temporary and ultimately unsatisfactory. The cycle of birth and death (samsara) continues, and after the merit is exhausted, a soul may fall into lower gatis.

    5. Limitations and Dangers

    • Attachment: Devas can become attached to their pleasures, making it harder to seek liberation (moksha).
    • No Keval Jnana: It is not possible to attain omniscience (Keval Jnana) or liberation directly from dev yoni; one must be reborn as a human.
    • End of Life: When their life in heaven ends, devas may be reborn in any of the four gatis, depending on their remaining karma.

    6. Description in Jain Texts

    • Scriptural Descriptions: Scriptures such as the Tattvartha Sutra, Uttaradhyayana Sutra, and others provide detailed accounts of the types, pleasures, and limitations of devas.
    • No Creator God: Jainism does not consider devas as creators or controllers of the universe; they are also bound by karma.

    7. Summary

    • Dev yoni is a state of great pleasure and luxury but is not considered the path to liberation.
    • Spiritual Goal: Jainism teaches not to aspire for heavenly birth, but to strive for moksha by right conduct, faith, and knowledge.
