    Answer

Pratikraman Vidhi is the Jain ritual of repentance, self-reflection, forgiveness, and purification of the soul. It is performed to ask forgiveness for faults committed knowingly or unknowingly through:

    • Mind
    • Speech
    • Body

A simple and commonly understood structure of Pratikraman includes the following steps:

    • Samayik – entering a state of equanimity
    • Vandan – respectful salutation to Guru or spiritual elders
    • Pratikraman – confession and repentance for past faults
    • Pratyakhyan – taking vows to avoid faults in the future
    • Kayotsarg – meditation by withdrawing attention from the body
    • Kshamapana – asking forgiveness from all living beings

    Simple Pratikraman Vidhi

A simplified Pratikraman can be done as follows:

    1. Prepare yourself
Sit in a clean and peaceful place. Keep your mind calm and focused.
    2. Bow with reverence
Remember Arihant Bhagwan, Siddha Bhagwan, Acharya, Upadhyay, and all Sadhus.
    3. Recite Namokar Mantra
Recite the Namokar Mantra with devotion and awareness.
    4. Do Samayik bhav
For some time, remain in equanimity and avoid worldly thoughts.
    5. Reflect on your mistakes
Think about any harm, anger, pride, deceit, greed, carelessness, harsh speech, or wrong actions committed during the day.
    6. Ask forgiveness
Repent sincerely and ask forgiveness from all living beings.
    7. Do Pratyakhyan
Resolve not to repeat the same mistakes and to live more carefully.
    8. Kayotsarg
Sit or stand still in meditation, detach from the body, and focus on the purity of the soul.
    9. End with forgiveness prayer
      Maintain the feeling:

“I forgive all living beings. May all living beings forgive me. I have friendship with all and enmity with none.”

    Spiritual Understanding

Pratikraman is not just a ritual. Its true purpose is inner purification.

    Through Pratikraman, a Jain reflects:

    • Where did I act with carelessness?
    • Did I hurt any living being?
    • Did anger, ego, deceit, or greed arise in me?
    • How can I become more aware and non-violent?

    The heart of Pratikraman is:

    • Alochana – admitting one’s faults
    • Pratikraman – turning back from wrong conduct
    • Pratyakhyan – resolving not to repeat it
    • Kshama – forgiveness

    Takeaway

Pratikraman is a sacred Jain practice of returning to the purity of the soul. Even if one cannot perform the full traditional Vidhi, doing it with sincere repentance, forgiveness, and awareness is spiritually meaningful.

For the exact full traditional Pratikraman text and order, one should follow the guidance of one’s Jain tradition, Guru, or local Sangh, because the Vidhi may differ between Shwetambar, Digambar, Sthanakvasi, Terapanthi, and other Jain traditions.
