If I dont do pratikraman is it ok if I am doing upvas

    Answer

Doing upvas is a very good Jain tapa, but it does not automatically replace Pratikraman.

If you are able, it is better to do at least some form of Pratikraman, even briefly and sincerely.

    Explanation

    In Jain Dharma:

    • Upvas is mainly a tapa for self-control, reducing attachment to food, and purifying the soul.
    • Pratikraman is for repentance, reflection, asking forgiveness, and correcting mistakes done through mind, speech, and body.

So both have different spiritual purposes.

If you cannot do full Pratikraman due to health, time, lack of knowledge, or genuine difficulty, you can still do a simple sincere practice such as:

    • Recite Navkar Mantra
    • Do Michhami Dukkadam with true repentance
    • Reflect on mistakes of the day
    • Resolve not to repeat them
    • Do some quiet meditation or samayik-like reflection

    Spiritual Understanding

Upvas without inner awareness can become only physical fasting. Pratikraman brings humility, forgiveness, and self-purification. Together, they make the tapa more meaningful.

    Takeaway

Yes, doing upvas is good, but try not to skip Pratikraman completely if you are capable. Even a short, sincere Pratikraman-bhav is better than none.
