    Sarv kalyanak gatha

    one year ago 153

In Jainism, Kalyanak refers to auspicious events in the lives of Tirthankaras and other great souls. There are traditionally five main kalyanaks celebrated:

    1. Chyavan (Conception) Kalyanak
    2. Janma (Birth) Kalyanak
    3. Diksha (Renunciation) Kalyanak
    4. Kevaljnan (Omniscience) Kalyanak
    5. Nirvan (Liberation) Kalyanak

Sarv Kalyanak Gatha is a prayer or hymn recited in honor of these auspicious events. There are many versions depending on the sect and region. Here is a common Jain Sarv Kalyanak Gatha in Sanskrit with its meaning:

    ---

(Gatha):

    ---

    Meaning (English Translation):

All Tirthankaras, the Lords, are blessed with five Kalyanaks: Conception, Birth, Renunciation, Omniscience, and Liberation. In Conception, the parents attain great joy, At Birth, Indra and other deities perform worship. At Renunciation, detachment arises, At Omniscience, nectar-like sermons are delivered. At Liberation, the bonds of the world are destroyed. Through the five Kalyanaks, all accomplishments are attained.

    ---

Purpose: This gatha is sung or recited in Jain temples, during Panch Kalyanak Pratishtha, and on auspicious occasions to remember the virtues and events in the lives of Tirthankaras.
