Difference Between Svetamabar And Digambar Jain

    2 hrs ago 1

    Answer

The main difference between Śvetāmbara and Digambara Jains is in their monastic practices, scriptural traditions, and certain beliefs about Tirthankars and liberation.

Both are major traditions of Jain Dharma and both accept the core Jain principles:

    • Ahimsa — non-violence
    • Anekāntavāda — many-sided truth
    • Aparigraha — non-possessiveness
    • Karma theory
    • Liberation of the soul
    • Reverence for the 24 Tirthankars

    Explanation

    1. Meaning of the names

    • Śvetāmbara means “white-clad.” Śvetāmbara monks and nuns wear simple white clothes.
    • Digambara means “sky-clad.” Digambara monks traditionally renounce clothing as a sign of complete non-possession. Digambara nuns wear simple clothes.

    2. Monastic practice

    • Śvetāmbara monks and nuns wear white robes and may keep limited religious items such as a bowl, broom, and scripture-related objects.
    • Digambara monks practice stricter external renunciation and traditionally possess almost nothing. They do not wear clothes. Digambara nuns wear white/simple garments.

    3. Scriptures

    • Śvetāmbaras accept the Āgamas as preserved scriptures of Jain teaching.
    • Digambaras believe the original Āgamas were lost over time and rely on later authoritative texts such as works of Āchāryas like Kundakunda and Umāsvāti/Umāsvāmi.

    4. Idol appearance

    • Śvetāmbara images of Tirthankars are often shown with open eyes and may be decorated with clothes, ornaments, or markings during worship.
    • Digambara images of Tirthankars are generally shown unclothed, without ornamentation, with a calm meditative form.

    5. View on women’s liberation

    • Śvetāmbara tradition holds that women can attain moksha directly.
    • Digambara tradition generally holds that one must be reborn as a man before attaining moksha, because complete Digambara monkhood is considered necessary for final liberation.

    6. Mallinath Bhagwan

    • Śvetāmbaras traditionally believe the 19th Tirthankar, Mallinath Bhagwan, was female.
    • Digambaras believe Mallinath Bhagwan was male.

    Spiritual Understanding

Although Śvetāmbara and Digambara traditions have differences, their spiritual goal is the same: purification of the soul and liberation from karma.

Both traditions teach that the path to moksha is based on:

    • Right Faith
    • Right Knowledge
    • Right Conduct

These are known as the Ratnatraya, the Three Jewels of Jain Dharma.

    Takeaway

Śvetāmbara and Digambara Jains differ mainly in outward practices and some doctrinal views, but both follow the same fundamental Jain path of ahimsa, self-discipline, karma purification, and moksha.
