Answer
In Jain Dharma, Porsi usually means taking a vow to avoid food and/or water for a fixed period of the day, commonly for about one prahar after sunrise. It is a small form of tapasya practiced with self-control and devotion.
How to Do Porsi
- Wake up early and complete morning cleanliness.
- Do Navkar Mantra with a calm mind.
- Take the vow mentally or in front of a guru/elder if available.
- Decide clearly whether your Porsi is:
- Chauvihar Porsi – no food and no water during the period
- Tivihar Porsi – no food, but water may be allowed depending on the vow
- During the Porsi time, avoid eating, drinking according to your vow, anger, gossip, and careless activities.
- Spend time in:
- Navkar Mantra
- Samayik
- Pratikraman
- Swadhyay
- Peaceful reflection
- After the fixed time is complete, end the Porsi respectfully and eat/drink only suitable Jain food.
Spiritual Understanding
Porsi is not only about not eating. Its deeper purpose is:
- control over taste and desire
- reduction of attachment to the body
- practice of discipline
- purification of thoughts
- growth in inner peace and awareness
Takeaway
Do Porsi with a peaceful mind, clear vow, and devotion. If you are new, elderly, ill, pregnant, or on medication, take guidance from your family guru, sadhu-sadhvi, or knowledgeable elder before doing it.
