    How to do pratikraman

    2 hrs ago 3

    Answer

Pratikraman is a Jain practice of repentance, self-review, forgiveness, and spiritual purification. It is done to reflect on mistakes committed through:

    • Mind
    • Speech
    • Body

A simple way to do Pratikraman is:

    • Sit peacefully with humility.
    • Remember Arihant, Siddha, Acharya, Upadhyay, and Sadhu-Sadhvi Bhagwant.
    • Reflect on your wrong actions, harsh words, anger, ego, deceit, greed, carelessness, and violence.
    • Ask for forgiveness sincerely.
    • Forgive all living beings.
    • Resolve not to repeat the same mistakes.
    • Recite traditional Pratikraman sutras if you know them.

    Explanation

The traditional Pratikraman method differs slightly by Jain tradition, such as Shvetambar Murtipujak, Sthanakvasi, Terapanth, Digambar, and others. Usually, a full Pratikraman includes sacred sutras, vandan, alochana, pratyakhyan, and kshamapana.

If you are learning, you may begin with this simple inner practice:

    • Samayik bhav: become calm and spiritually focused.
    • Alochana: honestly admit your faults.
    • Pratikraman: turn back from wrong conduct.
    • Pratyakhyan: take a vow to avoid repeating the mistake.
    • Kshamapana: ask forgiveness from all beings.

You may say with sincere feeling:

“Micchami Dukkadam. If I have hurt any living being knowingly or unknowingly, through mind, speech, or body, I ask for forgiveness.”

    Spiritual Understanding

Pratikraman is not just reciting words. Its true purpose is inner purification. In Jain Dharma, karma is bound through wrong thoughts, speech, and actions. Pratikraman helps reduce carelessness, ego, anger, and attachment.

The most important part is sincere repentance and the resolve to improve.

    Takeaway

To do Pratikraman properly, learn the traditional method from your Jain guru, sadhu-sadhvi, pathshala teacher, or local Jain sangh. But even as a beginner, you can start daily by honestly reviewing your actions, asking forgiveness, forgiving others, and resolving to live with more ahimsa, humility, and awareness.
