Who is panyas pravar? Are they the same as upadhyay's? What difference?

    2 hrs ago 1

    Answer

Panyas Pravar and Upadhyay are related to Jain monastic learning and teaching, but they are not exactly the same.

    In simple terms:

    • Upadhyay is one of the traditional Jain monastic ranks, especially connected with scriptural study and teaching.
    • Panyas / Panyas Pravar is an honorific scholarly title given to a learned Jain monk, usually one who has deep knowledge of scriptures, philosophy, logic, grammar, and religious teaching.

So, every Upadhyay is generally a highly learned monk, but a Panyas Pravar is not automatically the same as an Upadhyay.

    Explanation

In Jain tradition, especially among Śvetāmbara Jain communities, monks may receive different titles according to their learning, discipline, service, and responsibility.

Upadhyay means a spiritual teacher or preceptor. In the Namokar Mantra, we bow to:

    • Arihant
    • Siddha
    • Acharya
    • Upadhyay
    • Sadhu

Here, Upadhyay refers to monks who teach scriptures and guide other monks in religious learning.

Panyas is a respected title used for a monk who is especially learned. Pravar means excellent, eminent, or distinguished. So Panyas Pravar means an eminent or highly respected Panyas monk.

    Difference

    • Upadhyay: A formal traditional spiritual rank among Jain monks, especially associated with teaching scriptures.
    • Panyas Pravar: An honorific scholarly title given to a learned monk, often below the rank of Acharya or Upadhyay depending on the tradition and gaccha.
    • Upadhyay is directly mentioned in core Jain reverence through the Namokar Mantra.
    • Panyas Pravar is a later monastic title used within specific Jain sects or traditions to recognize scholarship and teaching ability.

    Spiritual Understanding

Both titles remind us of the Jain value of śruta-jñāna, scriptural knowledge. Jain Dharma gives great importance to those who preserve, study, teach, and explain the teachings of the Tirthankars.

However, the true greatness of any monk is not only in title, but in:

    • Right faith
    • Right knowledge
    • Right conduct
    • Renunciation
    • Compassion
    • Self-discipline

    Takeaway

Panyas Pravar is a respected scholarly title for a learned Jain monk. Upadhyay is a formal revered rank of a Jain teacher-monk. They are connected, but they are not necessarily the same.
