Types of categories/ division in jainism

    5 hrs ago 5

    Answer

In Jainism, “categories” or “divisions” can mean different things depending on the context. The main divisions are usually understood in these ways:

    • Divisions of Jain tradition
    • Divisions of living beings
    • Divisions of reality
    • Divisions of spiritual practice
    • Divisions of knowledge

    1. Main Sects of Jainism

The two major Jain traditions are:

    • Digambara – “sky-clad” tradition
    • Śvetāmbara – “white-clad” tradition

Both accept the core Jain principles such as:

    • Ahimsa – non-violence
    • Karma theory
    • Liberation of the soul
    • Teachings of the Tirthankars

There are differences in scriptures, monastic practices, and certain historical interpretations.

    2. Divisions of Reality

Jain philosophy explains reality mainly through six substances called Dravya:

    • Jīva – soul or living substance
    • Pudgala – matter
    • Dharma Dravya – medium of motion
    • Adharma Dravya – medium of rest
    • Ākāśa – space
    • Kāla – time

These help explain the Jain view of the universe.

    3. Divisions of Living Beings

Living beings are mainly divided by the number of senses:

    • One-sensed beings – earth-bodied, water-bodied, fire-bodied, air-bodied, and plant-bodied beings
    • Two-sensed beings – beings with touch and taste
    • Three-sensed beings – beings with touch, taste, and smell
    • Four-sensed beings – beings with touch, taste, smell, and sight
    • Five-sensed beings – beings with touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing

This classification is very important for practicing Ahimsa.

    4. Divisions of Spiritual Practice

Jain Dharma teaches the path of liberation through the Three Jewels:

    • Samyak Darshan – right faith
    • Samyak Jnan – right knowledge
    • Samyak Charitra – right conduct

These are the foundation of spiritual progress.

    5. Divisions of Conduct

Jain conduct is often divided into vows:

    • Mahāvrata – great vows followed by monks and nuns
    • Aṇuvrata – smaller vows followed by householders

    The five main vows are:

    • Ahimsa – non-violence
    • Satya – truthfulness
    • Achaurya or Asteya – non-stealing
    • Brahmacharya – celibacy or control of sensual desires
    • Aparigraha – non-possessiveness

    6. Divisions of Knowledge

Jainism describes different kinds of knowledge, commonly including:

    • Mati Jnan – sensory and mental knowledge
    • Śruta Jnan – scriptural knowledge
    • Avadhi Jnan – clairvoyant knowledge
    • Manahparyaya Jnan – knowledge of others’ thoughts
    • Keval Jnan – perfect infinite knowledge

    Takeaway

Jainism has many meaningful divisions, but they all help explain one main goal: how the soul can understand reality, avoid karma, practice Ahimsa, and move toward liberation.
