How I start to Practices in Jain Dharma
Beginning the practice of Jain Dharma (Jainism) can be a gentle and thoughtful process. Here are some foundational steps based on Jain teachings:
- Learn the Basics:
Study the core principles of Jainism, such as the three jewels—Right Faith (Samyak Darshan), Right Knowledge (Samyak Jnana), and Right Conduct (Samyak Charitra).
- Ahimsa (Non-violence):
Strive to practice ahimsa in thought, word, and deed. This means minimizing harm to all living beings, including insects and plants.
- Vegetarianism:
Follow a vegetarian diet, as it aligns with the principle of non-violence.
- Satya (Truthfulness):
Practice speaking the truth at all times.
- Asteya (Non-stealing):
Do not take anything that is not willingly given.
- Brahmacharya (Chastity):
Practice self-control and purity in thoughts and actions.
- Aparigraha (Non-possessiveness):
Reduce attachment to material things and desires.
- Daily Rituals:
If possible, perform daily prayers (pratikraman), meditation, and reading of Jain scriptures.
- Visit Jain Temples:
Participate in community prayers and rituals at local Jain temples.
- Observe Paryushan and Other Festivals:
Take part in important Jain festivals, especially Paryushan, which focuses on self-purification and forgiveness.
- Seek Guidance:
Learn from Jain monks, nuns, or experienced laypersons (Shravaks/Shravikas).
Remember, Jainism encourages gradual self-improvement. Start with small steps and deepen your practices as you learn more. If you are interested, you may also consider taking the “Anuvratas” (small vows) suited for householders, before progressing to more advanced vows.
